Why we are opposed

Why we are opposed

Members of the alliance oppose the Array for all or some of these reasons:

•  It would do immense damage to the seabed and wildlife, in an  area with multiple protected status
•  It would seriously harm the economy in an area highly dependent on landscape-based tourism
•  It will almost certainly prevent the area – which has the world’s second highest tidal flows – being developed for reliable, renewable tidal/marine current power.
•  Birds will be killed in large numbers.
•  The North Devon fishing industry will cease to exist, costing over 250 jobs. But the array will create virtually no new jobs for local people.
•  Construction will create 400 concrete and stone islands on the seabed, changing tidal flows, surf patterns and marine environments.
•  Wind energy is discredited as a renewable strategy, requiring over 90% back-up by carbon-inefficient gas power stations that negate all the carbon gains made.
•  The dash for wind energy is massively subsidised, making wind power three times more expensive than other power, paid for by increasing  all our fuel bills, pushing millions into fuel poverty.
•  The obsession with wind power is making a few people – developers, landowners and manufacturers – very rich at our expense.
